CV Tip - CV Dos and Don’ts
April 26, 2007 on 10:15 am | In CV Tips |Do
- When listing your work history identify any relevant skills, achievements or experienced gained. If you can not think of anything relevant then that’s a good clue that its best to just list the job title, start and finish date, as the employer probably wont be interested in it.
- Spend some time on the look and design of your CV, first impressions count and a CV which is visually appealing can make the difference between getting that interview and getting a “better luck next time” email
- Make sure that your CV is easy to navigate, an employer will typically check for certain experience, skills or qualifications before deciding whether to continue reading. If they cant find that information easily then they are likely to give up and move on to the next CV.
- Try and customize your CV for each job, making sure you highlight skills or experience which that job requires.
Don’t
- Place irrelevant or trivial information in prominent places on the CV
- When describing yourself don’t use tired old phrases like “works well on own or as part of a team” or “good communicator” instead try and make this obvious by using examples from your work history
- Never put anything which highlights your short comings on your CV, if you have to, make sure that you phrase it so that it doesn’t seem like a negative. If a job requires experience in a particular area which you don’t have try to highlight other skills or experience which are similar.
